What in the world is a banger rally?
Here ya go.... more information that you could ever possibly need. Click this link. We dare you.
What does BABE stand for?
That's an easy one Big Apple to Big Easy. Or for those who would never pick US City Nicknames from the Jeopardy board, New York to New Orleans.
This is named for the route that the event takes, which is -- oddly enough -- New York to New Orleans.
So is BABE a race?
No. Not no, but hell no. In other words nooooooooooo.
Just like all StreetSafari events, BABE is a rally. It is a particular type of rally, but it is still just a rally.
Most of the bangers can't even meet, much less exceed, the speed limit and there is no prize for getting anywhere first.
There are no time-versus-distance challenges, no wreckless routes, no driving stunts, no acting like an idiot. Well, not behind the wheel of a car, at least.
Cars must be managed in a safe, responsible, and legal manner at all times.
Hey, for most people, just getting the piece of crap car to the end is challenge enough.
When is BABE held?
The dates for BABE2009 are Monday, June 1 to Friday, June 5. Mandatory checkin is required on the evening of Sunday, May 31 in Staten Island.
How much time does BABE take and how many miles is it?
BABE covers roughly 1,500 miles from start line to finish point. There are five days on the road. There is also a checkin evening the night before the official start of the event, in order to sign in with the organizers and pick up necessary material and information so that you'll be ready for a prompt start the following morning.
The time and distance before and after the event depends entirely on where you are coming from and going back to, so you'll need to budget that in as well.
How many people can be on a team?
European events have number restrictions due to several factors. American events, at least currently, have no limit on the number of people you choose to cram into your vehicle and take along for the ride.
Do be aware, however, that in cases where we provide materials, equipment, or freebies, we may limit the number of items each team receives.
Regardless of how many people you bring along, however, each and every person must checkin before the start of the event so that we are aware of your participation.
This is not optional, it is required.
Is there an age limit on team members?
If the team member is driving, well then, of course. Otherwise, heck no.
It must be said that there is a very marked cultural difference between American and European rally events. American teams sometimes include entire families, whereas at the time of this writing, we have yet to see anyone under about 14 on a European team.
This policy may change in the future depending on the individual route, schedule, or theme, but for the time being, there are no plans to impose an age requirement on participants.
It should go without saying, however, that minors are the responsibility of their guardians, who should always use sound judgement with regard to the minor's participation and welfare.
How much does signup cost and what is included?
Each event is different. The current rate schedule and payment information is available on the event site under the Signup link.
Detailed information about StreetSafari payment and pricing policies can be found on the StreetSafari web site.
So where in the world am I supposed to find a $500 car?
Hey... not our problem. But lots and lots and lots of others have managed to find one, we are confident that you can, too. Consider it your first challenge.
But it definitely won't be your last.
